But business trips still get dumped in your lap at work, Aunt Edna still wants you to show up at the family reunion, and that beach vacation still beckons. So what's a traveller to do about swine flu?

First of all - get the facts.

Most cases of swine flu are turning out to be mild and don't even require a trip to the doctor's office. It's just another flu to suffer through with your usual over the counter medications and your mother's chicken soup. Of course, some people do get very sick from the H1N1 virus - these are usually people with an existing, chronic medical condition or are otherwise in a high-risk group such as those who are pregnant or elderly.

If you're in one of these categories, you may want to reconsider taking that trip just now, but there are still several things you can do to keep yourself safe:

# Don't panic. The World Health Organization has already given up on trying to keep swine flu from spreading. If it's not already in your hometown, it likely will be next week. So your travel plans probably don't have to change.

# Be smart. Don't travel when you've had the flu - any kind of flu - or for a few days after you feel like you've recovered. You could still spread the virus. And when you're away from home, don't give Uncle Regis a huge hug if he's been sneezing and blowing his nose. Smile and be friendly, but explain that you're trying to be extra careful with your health lately, and you're going to show your love with a smile and kind words instead.

# Be prepared. Bring supplies to help keep you from bringing home unwelcome viral guests. This includes:

* tissues - so you'll always have one on hand for that unexpected sneeze
* alcohol-based hand sanitizer - so you can clean your hands even if a sink is nowhere in sight.
* your doctor's phone number - in case you do get ill, you can check in via phone with a doctor who knows you.

# Take precautions. Wash your hands frequently - use that hand sanitizer, don't just pack it. Business trips involve a lot of hand-shaking with people you barely know, so a discrete hand-washing every half hour or so could keep you from getting sick with swine flu or the common cold.

# Do some research for international travel. If your travel plans are taking you outside the good old US of A, do some research ahead of time. Some countries are being more strict about swine flu precautions than others, and you don't want to be quarantined unexpectedly. Here are some resources for your research:

http://www.usembassy.gov/ http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html

# Know when to worry. If you or your child has difficulty breathing, or if you see your skin is turning blue or gray, it's important to get urgent medical attention. Other warning signs are:

* pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
* sudden dizziness or confusion
* severe or persistent vomiting
* flu symptoms that diminish, then return with worse fever or cough

With the right precautions, there's no need to reschedule that important business meeting in another state - but if you choose to use swine flu as an excuse to avoid that trip to Aunt Edna's family reunion, well that's up to you.

Copyright © 2009, Tribune Interactive

Why Not Backpack Mexico

If you like the sun and warmth, backpacking Mexico destinations can be a great alternative to heading down south to laze on a beach. "The Mexican Government and other stakeholders in the local Travel & Tourism industry have taught us all a lot because they have shown great leadership during their period of crisis, not to mention responsibility, timeliness and effectiveness.

"This was one of the clear messages that came out of our 9th Global Travel & Tourism Summit, held in Florianópolis, Brazil, in May 2009," Ms Ibrahim added. "The virus and the need for the global Travel & Tourism industry to prepare for a pandemic were top of the agenda at the Summit, and Mexico's responsible approach to reporting the outbreak and its impact impressed delegates from around the world."

In 2008, international tourist arrivals in Mexico grew by 5.9% to 22.6 million while US dollar travel spending by all visitors rose 3.4% to US$13.3 billion. More significantly, WTTC's research shows that the country's Travel & Tourism Economy increased its contribution to 13.2% of Mexico's GDP, growing by 3.8% - as against stagnation in Travel & Tourism Economy GDP posted by the Americas as a whole.

In addition and, even more importantly, given the global economic situation and rising unemployment around the world, an estimated 40,000 additional jobs were created directly last year by Mexico's Travel & Tourism Industry, raising the total number of people directly employed in the sector to 1.7 million.

Free Health Insurance In Mexico City

In a first-of-its-kind move, Mexico City will automatically cover tourists with free health insurance for emergencies.

Tourism is one of Mexico’s main economic activities, representing an important income through destinations divided into beach, adventure tourism, magic towns, social tourism, business tourism and other areas that pretend to present attractive offers for national and international visitors.

According to Mexico tourism and health officials, if you are a tourist and you come down with a disease or have an accident while visiting the city, you are automatically covered by the new health insurance protection plan.

A new Mexico Tourist Assistance Card provides travelers staying in the city’s hotels free coverage for emergency medical care, hospital stays, prescription drugs, and ambulance services. Established as an effort to win back tourists afraid of contracting swine flu in the Mexican capital, officials stated they hoped to send the message that Mexico City is a secure place that will protect its visitors.

Other countries providing nationalized health care to citizens, such as France and the United Kingdom, will also treat visitors in their hospitals on an urgent care basis. But Mexico City is the first in the world to set up a system specifically to help visitors obtain medical care for problems that arise during their trip. For example, a call center will have nurses who speak multiple languages.

A modest unspecified deductible payment will be charged for some services and there are rules to prevent people from abusing Mexico City's generosity.

Explore Mexico With Us!

Special Offers This August

Buy 3 day tours for the price of 2
(Oaxaca or Mexico City)

Buy a flexipass Cancun to Mexico or Mexico to Cancun $340 usd

Receive 5 FREE nights Accommodation in a hostel
(dorm or private room when buying 2)

Buy 3 shuttles and get 1 FREE day tour

Buy 5 shuttles and get 3 FREE nights Accommodation in a hostel
(dorm or private when buying 2)

Book Live!!

Night Life in Mexico City

Mexico City is constantly buzzing with activities and is a great place to go out, day or night. Whatever your style or preference, you are sure to find something suited to your mood. Blues, discos, hard core metal bands, jazz and salsa dancing are some of the things you will find during a night out on the town in here. With virtually unlimited options, enjoy the night life is certainly one of the most popular things to do in Mexico City.

Going Out Safe

Mexico City is bustling with life, there are a few things you should keep in mind as you wander the streets of the largest city in Mexico at night. First of all, it is safest to take a cab to your destination instead of walking but I recommend that you call a cab from your hotel instead of wave one down on the street.

This ensures that the cab is from a licensed cab company, whereas anyone could pick you up when flagging down a cab. Also, don’t forget to ask the price before you even get into a cab. This way you will avoid any surprises when you get to your destination and have a 400 peso cab fare to pay.

Second, carry a minimal amount of cash and belongings. I recommend bringing the amount of money you think you’ll spend and a backup, like a debit card, for any unexpected expenses. There is no need for you to bring a huge purse with all of your personal belongings to a bar. Leave them at the hotel in the safe if you’re worried about them.

Third, be prepared for high a cover charge if you are going to a popular place, especially if a band is playing or it is a disco. Sometimes ladies can get in for free before a certain hour, so research the place before you go. Also, many people in Mexico go out very late. They might start out the night at 11 p.m. or midnight and head home during the wee hours of the morning.

Also, people are very image conscious and it is not uncommon for someone to be turned away from a night club if he or she doesn’t fit the profile (due to fashion trends, etc.). If you or someone in your group is rejected from a place, keep your calm and move on. There are better times waiting ahead of you!

Finally, if you want to research your options before you go out, check out Tiempo Libre available online or in newsstands. If you want information in English, look for The News, an English-language newspaper that has a small weekend guide.

1 by smileygeekgirls on Flickr, 2 rick on Flickr

Great Flight Deals To Mexico

There has been a major drop-off in travel resulting from the swine flu epidemic and the current recession and it has hit all of Mexico's tourism industry hard.

Travel providers are responding with major sales. No matter when you choose to visit the place, you’ll always be able to soak up the sun and enjoy the time on the beach. But if you are not fond of spending days on the beach, you can plan some interesting day trips near-by as well.

Getting to Cancun

Cancún International Airport is the second biggest airport in Mexico. It’s located at just 10 km / 6 miles from the hotel strip. Many hotels offer a shuttle to transfer tourists to/from the airport. Make sure to ask for prices though.

Cheap flights to Cancun are easy to find no matter when you plant to travel. But of course, the most deals are available during the high season. Regardless of when you plan to travel, make sure to book in advance. If it’s possible try to fly mid-week as opposed to the weekend (you’ll save some money and the flights won’t be that crowded either).

Where to stay in Cancun

Cancun has been created as a place to spend your vacation so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are plenty of places to choose from. Hotels in Cancun come in many forms in sizes, from the cheap ones to the posh resorts where you can find everything you might have dreamed of.

If you prefer a cheaper alternative, there are some nice hostels near Downtown Cancun which you can choose from.

What to do

Besides soaking up the sun and trying all those lovely beach related activities, you can always plan a day trip to Chichen Itza . Do plan to get there early and come prepared for the heat and crowds.

Or you can enjoy a day on Isla Mujeres . There’s a lighthouse, a temple and some interesting places to sunbath and snorkel as well.

WAYAK SUMMER 2009

Dear traveller;

Wayak is happy to announce that after the swine flu alert, Mexico is up and running.
